Modular system (how upgrades work)

Cassette is modular from 35mm → 120 → 4×5 on the same base. Moving from 4×5 → 8×10 requires a new base (same workflow, larger footprint).

Choosing the right setup

Which Cassette product should I start with?
Start with the format you scan most. Most photographers begin with the 35mm Kit, then add 120 or 4×5 as needed.
Can I upgrade formats without relearning my workflow?
Yes. The goal is consistency: same capture mindset, same repeatable framing. 35mm → 120 → 4×5 stays on the same base. 8×10 keeps the workflow but requires a new base.
What if I want a single page that lists every holder option?
Use the Individual Film Holders page to choose a specific format holder (including slide options and customs).

Setup and workflow

Do I need a copy stand to get good results?
A stable support makes everything easier. A copy stand is ideal, but a solid tripod setup can work if alignment stays consistent shot-to-shot.
What light source should I use?
Use a stable, even light source that fully covers the scan area. Avoid hot spots and flicker. If you're building a modular setup, the Base + Diffuser helps smooth illumination.
Do I need special software to process my scans?
No. You can process captures with Lightroom, Negative Lab Pro, Capture One, or your preferred workflow.

Format-specific questions

Is 4×5 scanning harder than 35mm?
It can be more sensitive to even illumination and alignment, but once dialed, 4×5 camera scanning is fast and very consistent. Start here: 4×5 Holder.
Do I need to stitch for 8×10?
Sometimes—depending on your camera resolution and setup. Many workflows capture multiple frames and stitch for maximum detail. See: 8×10 Holder.
Are slide film holders available or can I request a custom size?
Yes. Slide holders are available. For custom sizes (including slide film), add notes during checkout on the Individual Holders page so we can match your workflow.

Shipping, fit, and confidence

How do I know this will fit my workflow before I order?
Start with the DSLR Film Scanning Guide to confirm lighting and capture fundamentals. Then choose your format based on what you scan most.
I already have a kit—what's the smartest next add-on?
If you're adding formats, choose a new holder first. If you're refining consistency, consider Accessories that improve stability, alignment, or light control.
